The world is ruled by spirits, goblins, and all manner of strange creatures. Human beings are persecuted, to the very point of extinction. One day a golem, and a lone human girl meet.
This is a record of the pair, one a member of a ruined race, the other a watchman of the forest. It tells of their travels together and the bond between father and daughter.
Somali and the Forest Spirit is a beautifully drawn and plotted anime. I don’t have one complaint yet [I know this is only episode two, let me live]. I’ve read a ton of comments where viewers were say that they think that the whole plot is going to be about Golem finding Somali’s parents. I am here to dispute that. I maybe the only person on the planet that thinks differently.
If you haven’t watched this series yet please do and judge for yourself. There is so much more to this series than the adventure and while I get that draws in viewers I feel personally [which you can dispute in the comments] that this story has a life altering message. [Yes, I know I’m dramatic. Leave me alone.]
Like episode one Somali has made me laugh, smile, and give her that universal worried mom look. I still stand by what I have guessed her age to be. She brings a lightheartedness to what could be a very sad show. Seriously if you look past Somali’s cuteness for two minutes the plot of this anime is very heavy. There is always that body rendering tension throughout the episode over the possible discovery of Somali’s race by every new character they meet.
What did it for me:
While I came for Somali I’m staying for Golem. His character is so well written. The revelations giving during this episode could have been easily guessed from the references in the last one but the delivery is what blows me away. His character development through this season is going to bring me to tears [ I’m calling that one now].
