This is the post where I rant and or rave about the new Netflix original series Fate: The Winx Saga. I have no one in my life to talk to about this. I’ll try to keep my thoughts somewhat organized in this post. Even if my mind is chaotic as hell. There will be some people who are reading this that don’t know a thing about this series. Fate: The Winx Saga is A live-action adaptation of Nickelodeon’s Winx Club. It follows Bloom as she adjusts to life in the Otherworld, where she must learn to control her dangerous magical powers. This is obviously an abbreviated version. There’s obviously so much more to the series than just that but, why spoil the fun.
There were a lot of changes in the Netflix adaptation of Winx Club. The biggest is the overall tone of the series. Netflix made Winx a lot darker as an attempt to cater to the generation who watched the Nickelodeon version. I don’t hate that aspect. In fact, I loved so many things about this new Winx Club.
Unfortunately, I’m going to be that person. I’m going to keep it a hundred and give you my real opinions. As much as I enjoyed the Netflix series, it’s not Winx Club. Winx Club was all about fashion, friendship, and discovering who you want to be. Yeah, they fought a few bad guys, saved the world a couple of times, and fell in love. I can’t help but feel like they used the name, the characters, and an already created world to gain a ready made fan base. The sad part is this series could have been just as good if the title didn’t have Wink Club in it.
About The Fashion and White Washing
The fashion in this season sucked. The girls didn’t have to be all glitter and sparkles but, did they really have to make the girls look so dull? I could understand Bloom dressing in everyday clothes because she’s from world one. But why aren’t Musa, Terra, Aisha, and Stella dressed in a way that sets them apart? And what happened to the school uniforms?
The whitewashing is sad. One of the best things about the original Winx was the diversity. It’s so hard to find a show that everyone can find themselves in. Winx gave a lot of little girls a chance to see themselves represented on tv in a positive light. Musa in the Nickelodeon series is Asian. I can’t say they whitewashed Terra because technically she’s Flora’s (who was the nature fairy in the original) cousin. But here me out in the og Winx Flora is Hispanic so why is Terra white. I know there are lighter Hispanics but it’s very clear that Terra is a hundred percent white.
Overall I did really enjoy this series. I don’t want you to think that I didn’t like it and I’m just bashing it. I would recommend the show to anyone who likes fantasy. Just keep in mind that it’s nothing like the Winx Club you knew.
